Some individuals are especially prone to bad luck and misfortune, and cinema is no exception. In fact, some Hollywood actors play the roles of the unluckiest characters more often than others. This led us to investigate which Hollywood actor has played the most unlucky characters in Hollywood by devising our very own points-based scoring system.

The Index

After determining the top Box Office actors and their most successful movies, we sought to determine which actors play the most unluckiest characters by awarding points based on the following ‘unlucky’ factors after analysing each movie’s script:

  • The number of times someone was jailed, attacked, hurt, divorced, died or involved in an accident.
  • The number of deaths each actor’s characters have experienced.

Methodology:

        1. Topratedcasinos.ie looked at the top 100 stars in leading roles at the US Box Office; this is based on the cumulative domestic box office of all the movies in which an actor has had a leading role. Roles in animated movies and other voice-only roles were included.
        2. Each actor’s five most successful movies were analysed. The scripts from these movies were then investigated to find the number of mentions for each unlucky factor. The unlucky index includes the number of times someone was jailed, attacked, hurt, divorced, died and involved in an accident in each actor’s movie. Additionally, the unlucky index includes the number of deaths each actor’s characters have experienced across all of their leading movies.
        3. The number of unlucky factors found within the script were then converted into a point scoring system using min-max normalisation, with the maximum score being 800.
        4. Each actor was then ranked in order of unluckiest characters based on the number of points accumulated.
